Professor PK Gupta was born in Saharanpur, UP on December 14, 1936 and had his early education there. Later, he completed his BSc (DAV College Muzaffarnagar) and MSc (Meerut College, Meerut) from Agra University, standing First in order of merit among MSc Botany students of Agra University (1958). He started his teaching/ research career at Meerut College during 1958-59, followed by one year teaching assignment at DAV College Muzaffarnagar during 1959-60, and later served as a lecturer at Gorakhpur University for 9 years (1960-69). During this period, he was also on leave to avail Commonwealth Scholarship in Canada (1964-67) for completing his PhD degree in the subject of ‘wheat cytogenetics’ at the University of Manitoba. After returning from Canada in 1967, he served again at Gorakhpur University for two years before joining Meerut University in July 1969, where he continued for the remaining part of his life. He served there first as Reader (1969-76) and then as Professor (Department of Agricultural Botany, now Department of genetics & Plant Breeding) & Dean (Faculty of Agriculture) till his retirement in December 1996. During his stay at Meerut, for the purpose of advanced research and for participation in international symposia and conferences, he traveled world-wide in different countries (e.g., Canada, USA, Mexico, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Syria, Australia, Japan, Thailand, China, Australia, etc.). After his retirement from active service in 1996-97, he continued working at Meerut University (now known as CCS University) in various capacities (CSIR Emeritus Scientist, 1967-2002; UGC Emeritus fellow 2002-2003; INSA Senior Scientist 2003-2006; INSA Hony. Scientist 2007-2010; NASI Senior Scientist, 2010-Contd). The university also appointed him Hony. Emeritus Professor for life to allow him continue working in this university for the rest of his life. During his long academic career of more than 50 years, he also served as an expert on various academic bodies/committees of funding agencies including DST, DBT, UGC, ICAR, and CSIR. During his active teaching/research career, Professor Gupta successfully completed a large number of research projects funded by various funding agencies, leading to supervision of more than 75 PhD students and publication of more than 350 research papers in diverse areas of genetics in Indian and foreign journals of repute. His research interests involved almost all areas of plant genetics and plant breeding including cytogenetics, biometrical genetics, mutation research, quantitative genetics, molecular marker technology, crop biotechnology, etc. He has also written more than a dozen text books on genetics and biotechnology for university students, which are widely read. He also edited a number of books and served on the editorial board of many journals. He is a member of about two dozen scientific bodies in India and abroad, and is a fellow of all the national Academies in the area of Science and Agriculture (FNA, FNASc, FASc, FNAAS). He also earned various academic awards too many to be enumerated (including the prestigious Birbal Sahni Gold Medal of the Indian Botanical Society).
